Lexington Chinese Language School- May 13, 2007
On Sunday, May 13, 2007, William Hsu, M.D., visited the Lexington Chinese Language School to speak about diabetes and its impact on the Asian American population. Approximately 40 Chinese-American adults, mainly parents of students attending the weekend language school, attended the event. The warm reception and engaging response from the audience demonstrated the strong need to increase awareness of the topic among this population.
Monte Jade Biotechnology- May 5, 2007
AADI was one of the sponsors of the Taiwan-US Biotechnology Forum organized by Monte Jade Science & Technology Association of New England (MJNE) at the Harvard Medical School New Research Building in Boston, MA on May 5, 2007. As one of the exhibitors at the conference, AADI was able to establish new relations and introduce the organization and its mission to new community members.
Dorchester House- April 30, 2007
On Monday, April 30, 2007, AADI members William Hsu, M.D., Sophia Cheung, R.D., and Nancy Hong were invited back to Dorchester House to share their valuable insights on educating patients on carbohydrate counting and the integration of diet with medication adjustment. Clinicians, nutritionists, nurses, and coordinators from Dorchester House gathered for the noon session, and were particular interested in learning about various food items and its impact on blood glucose levels.
Boston Medical School- April 23, 2007
Because of the positive feedback received from Tufts medical students in December 2006, AADI members, William Hsu, M.D., Sophia Cheung, R.D., and Nancy Hong were invited to speak to the medical students at the Boston Medical Center. Approximately 30 medical students attended the talk, “Diabetes- What’s Ethnicity Got To Do With It?” which enabled a lively and educational discussion on managing Asian Americans in treatment of diabetes both from a clinical and a nutritional and educational perspective.
“For Your Health For Your Wealth” Seminar and Screening at United Commercial Bank- April 1, 2007
AADI team members- George King, M.D., William Hsu, M.D., Sophia Cheung, R.D., and Nancy Hong- along with 13 volunteers from Tufts University, Tufts Medical School, Harvard Medical School, and Joslin- held a special seminar, For Your Health For Your Wealth dedicated to restaurant owners and workers in the Boston Chinatown area. There were over 80 attendees, mainly Cantonese-speaking individuals over 50 years old. The event commenced with a short talk entitled: “Money Smart”, presented by Angela Mah, Vice President Retail Banking Officer of United Commercial Bank. Following was a two-part discussion (clinical and nutritional) led by Dr. Hsu and Sophia on diabetes and how it affects those working in the restaurant industry. Afterwards, A1C (blood glucose) screenings were performed on interested participants and medical health consultation was provided as needed. Of the 51 participants screened, 33 had an A1C level of over 6.0%. Attendees were also given a free gift bag of dental hygiene products, donated by Sunstar, Inc. The event was covered by Chinese local newspapers, including World Journal, Sing Tao, and Da Ji Yuan.
Diabetes management in the Vietnamese Population - December 4, 2006
On December 4, 2006, AADI held an outreach event at the Dorchester House. The Dorchester House is a multi service community health center that serves a large number of Vietnamese patients. William Hsu, M.D. and Sophia Cheung, R.D., while sharing their experiences in treating the Vietnamese patients with diabetes, elicited an insightful discussion with the Dorchester House staff concerning the cultural issues in this population. AADI looks forward to future collaborations with the Dorchester House in developing more linguistically and culturally appropriate materials for our Vietnamese patients!!
Tufts Medical School- December 1, 2006.
On Friday December 1, 2006, AADI members William Hsu, M.D., Sophia Cheung, R.D., and Nancy Hong gave a talk to the Tufts Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) entitled: Diabetes in Asian Americans- What’s Ethnicity Got To Do With It? AADI members also presented an overview of the organization’s mission, approach, and activities, and had a meaningful conversation with the attendees about the cultural and linguistic barriers when taking care of Asian American patients with diabetes. Much enthusiasm was expressed among the student group, and future collaboration possibilities with interested students in outreach events were established.
Tzu-Chi Health Screening Day- November 4, 2006
On Saturday November 4th, 2006, AADI participated in an outreach event organized by the Tzu-Chi Health Organization at the Hyde Community Center. From 10am till 3pm, approximately, 70-80 Chinese- and Cantonese-speaking participants visited the AADI booth. Collaborating with Tzu-Chi volunteers, several attendees were screened for hyperglycemia and then referred to the AADI booth to receive more information on clinical services and diabetes information specific to the Asian American population.
Harvard School of Public Health’s Community Partnership Day- September 27, 2006
The topic for the 16th Annual Community Partnership Day was on the Massachussetts Health Reform. Speakers Nancy Turnbull, from BCBS MA Foundation, and others led a profound discussion on the initiative to ensure coverage for all residents of MA. Audience members were very engaged and provided their concerns regarding health disparities and outreach for expanding outreach. During the community organizations fair afterwards, AADI members were able to educate attendees about the initiative and make contact with several students and health professional who were interested in working with AADI to further promote our cause.
APIA Health Forum in San Jose, Calif.- September 14-16, 2006
On Sept. 14-16, 2006, George King, M.D., and William Hsu, M.D., were the honored guest speakers on the diabetes panel at the first annual Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum in San Jose, Calif. With an estimated 500 conference attendees, the three-day health summit brought together community members and leaders from all walks of life united by one cause: the commitment to improve the health and well being of Asians and Pacific Islander Americans. During the diabetes panel discussions, George King, M.D.,spoke about the rising incidence of diabetes and the current status of diabetes research in Asian populations and moderated a discussion among diabetes experts from various organizations covering topics on risk factors, barriers to prevention, diagnosis and treatment and advocacy. William Hsu, M.D., spoke on the importance of culturally sensitive and appropriate education for Asian ethnic groups. Although the discussion revealed the challenges related tothe lack of data on this population, the collective passion demonstrated by the presenters and attendees was very encouraging.

Benefit Lunch in Los Angeles, Calif. - January 21, 2006
One of the founding families of AADI, Larry and Sally Ho, organized a benefit lunch for AADI in Hilton at LA-San Gabriel. George King, M.D. and William Hsu, M.D. gave an overview on diabetes in the Asian community and the operation of AADI. Over 170 people attended the informative and festive benefit lunch. The event received numerous Asian media coverage. Thanks to the Ho's for a successful event!
Wang YMCA of Chinatown- December 3, 2005
Steve Wang from YMCA invited AADI to go share with the community about diabetes. William Hsu, M.D. spoke about basic diabetes. The audiences consist of mainly Cantonese speaking Chinese from Chinatown.
Chinese Hospital Annual Award Honoree- October 28, 2005
George King, M.D. was honored by the Chinese Hospital Board of Trustees and Medical Staff in San Francisco as the recipient of the 32nd Annual Award for 2005.
Harvard School of Public Health’s Community Partnership Day- October 5, 2005
There were many who participated in the 15th Annual Community Partnership Day. Angela Mah from HSPH invited William Hsu, M.D. as one of the panelists in a discussion facilitated by Dr. Koh. William Hsu, M.D. and the other 4 panelists had a wonderful discussion on the subject of leadership.
August Moon Festival- August 24, 2005
AADI had a great community outreach with the Quincy Asian Resources, Inc (QARI) in Quincy, MA on August 21, 2005. Quincy is apopular location for Asians; it is fast becoming Boston's second Chinatown. According to U.S. Census Bureau of 2000, there was a 140% growth in Asians in Quincy. AADI had a booth and a full-page ad in this event. There was about 100 people came by to learn about AADI. People were really excited to get freebies. They filled out a contact form and received pedometers and pens as gifts. Staff from QARI suggested that AADI joint forces with the city of Quincy to do some teachings on diabetes with Asian Americans in the future.
Mount Jade New England- August 19, 2005
Monte Jade New England (MJNE) invited George King, M.D. and William Hsu, M.D. to be one of their speakers at the MJNE 2005 Annual Meeting. MJNE is a group of Taiwanese American professionals who is primarily in the field science and technology. Almost 100 professionals came by the AADI table to learn about what current research and diabetes care is available through AADI at Joslin Diabetes Center. The annual meeting was health at Harvard Medical School New Research Building in Boston, MA.
CME Symposium New Jersey- June 25th, 2005
AADI is going to Short Hills, NJ on June 25th, 2005! This is the 9th and last series of a CME-Accredited Symposium conducted for Health Care Professionals who treat people of Asian Origin with Diabetes. Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, the largest Asian Community Health Center, will be hosting this event.
Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center- Chinatown- June 24, 2005
AADI was invited back for another outreach with the GBCGAC at the Chinatown site. Approximately 40 Cantonese speaking Chinese seniors attended a General Diabetes talk. After learning the importance of diabetes self-management, a few of them signed up to be new patients for the Asian Clinic at Joslin Diabetes Center. The Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center program serves economically and linguistically disadvantaged Chinese-speaking elders. Massachusetts Buddhist Association- June 4, 2005
Thirty-four Mandarin speaking Chinese attended a general diabetes talk from William Hsu, M.D. and Sophia Cheung, R.D. at a local temple in Lexington, MA on June 4, 2005. The calm crowd did not take long to warm up and fired up. Many of them expressed their gratitude in having resources such as AADI and are interested in our fundraiser events in the future. They also volunteered to advertise for our website on their own website so more of their members would know about us.
Golden Age Center- Cambridge Site- May 20, 2005
A great outcome came from AADI outreach at the Cambridge Senior Center on May 20, 2005. About 50 Mandarin and English speaking Chinese seniors participated in the Basic Diabetes presentation. The Cambridge Senior Center is supported by the Department of Human Services Programs devoting services and programs to the seniors. Future collaborations are requested by the staffs for us to return to do more diabetes teaching.
CME Symposium Chicago- May 14th, 2005
AADI is going to Chicago, IL on May 14th, 2005! This is the 8th series of a CME-Accredited Symposium conducted for Health Care Professionals who treat people of Asian Origin with Diabetes.
ADA Boston Diabetes EXPO- March 19, 2005
AADI joined an ADA exposition aimed at educating health care professionals about current research in diabetes professionals about current research in diabetes care. About 75 professionals visited our booth during the Healthcare Professionals Luncheon Debate at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston, MA.
