This website is supported through a fund established at Joslin to foster research, care and education for Asian Americans with diabetes, especially young Asian Americans. An additional goal of the fund is to develop culturally appropriate treatment interventions and education programs for this at-risk population.
AADI appreciates all contributions from our supporters. We sincerely thank all our donors for their generosity in helping us raise diabetes awareness among Asian Americans. If you would like to support our initiatives in research, clinical treatment, education and outreach, please call Candace Roosevelt at (617) 264-2785 or e-mail: candace.roosevelt@joslin.harvard.edu.
A study by the CDC notes that the incidence of diabetes is rising much faster in Asian Americans (10 to 15 percent) than in Caucasian American populations (6 to 8 percent). People of Asian descent living in Western cultures appear to be unusually vulnerable to diabetes for reasons still unclear. The alarming increase in incidence of diabetes in Asian Americans is similar to that occurring in Hong Kong. "Unfortunately, focused research for these populations has not been undertaken," says AADI Director George L. King, M.D. Your funding is crucial to our projects.
Our Long-Term Goals The donors involved in helping to establish the Asian American Diabetes Initiative hope that money donated can be used to develop and implement innovative and culturally-appropriate clinical intervention programs, treatment options and educational materials and technology for Asian Americans with diabetes and their families. They also hope that research findings and new programs and materials that grow out of this work can be disseminated to medical professionals and the community at large.
