People at Risk

Certain groups of people are at higher risk for developing diabetes than the general population:
  • Age 45 or older
  • Overweight (Am I overweight? Click here)
  • Physically inactive
  • Have pre-diabetes (To check if you have pre-diabetes, click here)
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans
  • Gestational diabetes (GDM), or women who have given birth to a child weighing more than 9 pounds
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • HDL cholesterol level (the good cholesterol) of 35 mg/dl or lower and/or a triglyceride level of 250 mg/dl or higher
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) 
  • History of blood vessel disease
