People at Risk
Certain groups of people are at higher risk for developing diabetes than the general population:
- Age 45 or older
- Overweight (Am I overweight? Click here)
- Physically inactive
- Have pre-diabetes (To check if you have pre-diabetes, click here)
- Family history of diabetes
- Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans
- Gestational diabetes (GDM), or women who have given birth to a child weighing more than 9 pounds
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- HDL cholesterol level (the good cholesterol) of 35 mg/dl or lower and/or a triglyceride level of 250 mg/dl or higher
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
- History of blood vessel disease
